Hi, I’ve recently switched from FCP 7 and am enjoying the many benefits of PP. However, one major irritant is the renaming of clips, so I want to know if I’ve got this right.

    1. I use the sequence to review various clips by dragging them all in, looking at them, and then deciding which one I want to use. It’s easy to rename them but the original file in the project doesn’t change,so why do it? Shouldn’t I just bring in the original files (0043.mov, mp4, etc) and use the “reveal in project” shortcut to rename the clip in the project. Is this what is commonly done?

Maybe I’ve gotten into a bad habit of reviewing files in the sequence before editing them..just to decide which ones I’ll keep. It’s convenient to toggle thru the clios quickly.

    2. I can change the name in the project panel and then drag it in the sequence but this seems to be slowing down the initial review process. Same thing applies when I dbl click the file and look at it in the source monitor.

    3. There’s no way to have the changed clip name in the project panel change the name of the clip in the original file in the hard drive without manually doing it ??

Finally, who do I ask the PLEASE consider in the next upgrade a shortcut, or whatever, to change the name of the original file when the project name is changed. And another one to change the name in the project panel when it’s changed in the sequence. Please??

If i’m all wrong somebody set me straight. Thanks.

Keep in mind that Premiere Pro is not like FCP. When you’re working with metadata-intense native camera formats like Panasonic P2 or XDcamEX, you can’t simply change the name of some part of the media file structure in the source media and expect it to function…it won’t.

With FCP, since so much of your media is transcoded to a QT file prior to import, changing the name of the one file is pretty low-impact.

You can trim the project and tell the mechanism to use whatever names you’ve revised on the edit sequence when it creates the trimmed project with many formats.

As far as transcoding formats like DSLR…whether that becomes necessary will have more to do with the horsepower of your workstation than any other factor since most of the heavy lifting there is simply getting adequate decode torque.
