Removing Pulldown in an MPEG-2?
Dear friends,
I’ve got an old MPEG-2 clip that is 29’97 (up to the QT Info).
My intention is to use it with 25fps footage.
The clip is from the early 50’s so I guess was shoot in 16mm.
is there any way to get back the original 24fps?

YOu have to convert it to an I frame format first…ProRes, DV…something. THEN you can reverse telecine… GOP formats don’t reverse. Then after you get it to 24fps, conform to 25fps with Cinema Tools.

I know all this from the theory, but I’ve never put my hands on.
no problem about the conforming, but what about the different “Pulldown patterns’ that I can find?
Would that affects me?

Since this footage was converted at some point to a GOP format (MPEG 2), I think it\’s unlikely you will ever be able to get back to the original \”true\” 24 frames. You will likely see frame blending using every pulldown option because the MPEG encoding has irrepairably altered the original frames….some of them no longer exist…regardless of whether you convert back to Pro Res or some other I Frame format.
Won\’t hurt to try though.

The clip is very old and interesting so I guess people wouldn’t notice much if would play choppy, but you know our silly perfectionism.

I am trying to do nearly the exact same thing – use old stock footage
originally shot on film (WW2 battle stuff) given to me as 29.97 quicktimes but not as mpeg2 – instead with an animation codec.i’d like to use them in my 25p DVCPro HD project (which we are going to make both PAL and NTSC DVDs from btw)
From reading about this on the forums the solution seems to be as shane says – convert to iframe (compressor for this? I seem to get “Failed” messages)
Then I can supposedly use cinema tools (as you’d expect i’m getting temporal compression errors if i try it straight away) to make it 25p…
Has anyone got any pointers for things i may have missed?
I’m using 10.6.2.
