Someone has given me footage to edit, and of course they insisted on 24p. And of course they were not consistent with how they were recording 24p with their HVX. Since I never bother shooting or working with 24p, this is kinda new to me.

In the Log and Transfer window, the Format column is telling me that some footage is 1080pA24. Not a problem. I capture that, FCP sees it at 29.97 in the browser, I remove advanced pulldown in FCP, FCP now sees that it’s 23.98, and I’m good to go. I then bring it into Compressor and export it as DVCPro50 Anamorphic @ 23.976 because he wants it delivered as SD. So I’m editing in SD.

Then there is other 24p footage – 1080p24 it says in the Log and Transfer window. According to my “Final Cut Pro 6: Working with High Definition and Broadcast Formats” this format records standard pulldown, and FCP cannot remove standard pulldown. So I went on to read that it must be done in Cinema Tools.

I don’t know Cinema Tools. So I came to the Cow. Found a post of Jeremy G explaining how to do a reverse telecine in Compressor. Seemed simple, so I tried it. But it didn’t work? Hmm. I followed his steps (which are simple) and did the down-conversion to DVCPro50 at the same time. Bad idea? I dunno.

So I figured I’d go with Cinema Tools. The manual says to go to File > Open Clip. I select the clip from my capture scratch, but then Cinema Tools isn’t allowing me to do a reverse telecine. The button at the bottom is greyed out.

So I’m out of ideas. Any tips/advice/guidance is appreciated.

    Thanks

I tried the Compressor route again, but this time I didn’t down-convert to DVCPro50. I just did the reverse telecine and exported DVCPro HD, and I got no artifacting this time.

So I will do that to the rest and do a batch down-conversion to DVCPro 50 afterward.

    Thanks for reading.
