Removing pulldown from 20 fps 1080i transfer
Hi all,
I have a bit of a puzzle. I don’t know if it can be resolved, but I am looking for solutions. We had a silent film that runs at 20fps transferred to 1080/59.94i (normally we do 23.98psf transfers, but that woild have messed up the speed in this case.) The D5 master has a 3:3 pulldown sequence (instead of a 3:2, it has 3 progressive frames and 1 interlaced frame; I suppose you could call it a 3:1), which we would like to remove make restoration easier/cleaner. Obviously, most tools, including FieldsKit, only have 3:2 patterns. Is there any way of removing this pulldown?

I gather you are saying it has 3 good frames – 1 field frame – 3 good frames – 1 field frame ?
As in if the data is only duplicated in the frames with fields – then maybe if you are using an application like AE or Combustion that distinguish FPS and Duration, then maybe you can remove the duplicated data by cheating the FPS in Footage Interp. (assuming it’s the same cadence over all)
I think for example if you have 12.5 FPS in a 25 FPS movie (each frame duplicated) then all you do is say it has 50 FPS in Interpret Footage, then drop that into a 25 FPS and then it has no more duplicated frames, however then it is half as long.
So as per your saying, your actual data is probably at something like 19.98 in a 59.94 video (if 24 X 29.97/30 is approx 23.976 then 20 X 59.94/60 is 19.98 which is exactly a third of 59.94). Now you are telling me they did not transfer to 59.94 in a manner which just triplicates each frame. SO I would have to see a second of footage to see 🙂
