Removing power and phone wires.
Posted by Warren Elliott on August 24, 2010 at 4:03 amHi all. Okay so I’m still learning. Doing a shot with a 1800 building however it has power lines running to it from the right hand side and we cannot get them physically removed. I run Final Cut Studio 2. Any suggestions on how I can post edit the lines out. See attached image at
Yes the car will not be there.

August 24, 2010 at 1:09 pmDo you have Adobe After Effects?
This is what I would use.

August 24, 2010 at 2:04 pmIs the shot going to be static or moving? Static you’ll be able handle yourself. If it’s not locked off you’d best either hire a VFX person ASAP or master motion tracking yourself ASAP. And, Autodesk Combustion would be a better tool than AE.

August 24, 2010 at 8:11 pmThanks Guys. One shot static. Just don’t have those additional software packages you both suggested. Is it not possible in Color or Motion then?

August 24, 2010 at 9:53 pmColor is a grading tool. Motion can do this job. You could also do it in FCP but Motion is much better.

August 25, 2010 at 1:09 pmI would think you could duplicate the footage in Motion, mask out the wires with the pen tool, invert the mask so you have a layer with just the wires, then move the mask up a little so you have a layer with just sky of a similar colour. Then move that layer back down so the wires are covered by Sky. Feather the mask or blur the layer a little to cover any gradient joins. Should be OK.
The area on the front of the building might require more work – if the shot is static, you could make a layer in Photoshop using clone tools using a clean bit on the wooden panelling.
If the thought of any of this makes your head spin, hire a pro for half an hour – it’s a very quick fix.
