    I’m very new to Illustrator CS6, so this is probably a rookie question-

    I need these invisible points out of that main path (see the first image with two superimposed red circles) so that no needless overlapping occurs, but whenever I selectively delete them it also deletes fragments of the paths I need to keep.
    In a perfect world, I’d have what’s depicted in the second image (photoshopped). I’ve got hundreds of these points to get rid of all in that one main path.

    Got it.

    Selected the intersecting paths, then under the pathfinder window I used the Shape Mode Unite.
