Removing multi cam so can convert to premiere
Posted by Harry Deansway on June 14, 2020 at 9:01 amHello, I edited a project on FCPx which I am trying to share with an editor who works in Premiere. The FCPx edit is done in multi cam and that appears to be hindering the conversion. Is there a way to remove multi cam and keep the edit so I can then export and convert the project to work in Premiere?
Or maybe there is another way I am not thinking about.
Many thanks

XtoCC will supposedly flatten multicams to the active angle. Other things may not be translated; see the docs: https://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/Xto7/help/XtoCC%20-%20Help.pdf

Another approach is exporting an fcpxml to Resolve, then export an AAF from that to Premiere: https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/how-to-migrate-timelines-between-video-editing-applications/
Cross-NLE workflow can be cumbersome and frustrating. If you plan and test the workflow ahead of time, you can limit the editing constructs to those which more readily transfer.

June 14, 2020 at 2:55 pmThe problem is the multicam, anything edited in multicam on FCPx shows up as red in Premiere once converted. So the only solution is to re edit in FCPx removing the multi cam (how do I do that?) or the other option is just start from scratch in Premiere.

June 14, 2020 at 5:07 pmWait cant you just break apart clips? Or do a commit?
Sorry Im so far away from FCPX to check but I know there is a way to flatten (or so I think). -

I just tested XtoCC (aka X27) on an FCPX 10.4.8 multicam project and the translated XML loaded OK in Premiere 14.2.0. As previously stated, the multicam clip from FCPX is “flattened” to the active angle, but it appears as an editable item in Premiere, including external audio.
This was on Catalina 10.15.5, XtoCC ver 1.2.21, and using FCPX XML ver. 1.7.

You have to relink the media in Premiere.

June 15, 2020 at 6:22 pmThanks buddy, I’m a bit of an amateur so I’m not sure about spending £50 on the conversion programme in case I can’t get it to work, the FCPx is mainly edited on multi cam and is quite a big project. I might just re edit the whole thing from scratch.

How are you translating it now?

June 15, 2020 at 6:47 pmA friend did this for me – “importing into DaVinci Resolve, then exporting to FCP7 xml THEN importing into Premiere”
I can edit but when it comes to any technical stuff I have no clue, file types, xmls etc… but I am trying to learn, so any direction is appreciated.

Did they relink in Premiere? When everything is ‘red’ that usually means media offline, so they have to relink the media from within Premiere.

June 15, 2020 at 6:56 pmHmm, I’ve now taken the project to try and solve this issue. So am starting from scratch. I did notice that when I imported the XML myself this afternoon, there was a timeline but no bins. So i’m wondering if I exported the XML correctly the first time. Also the odd file name was scattered around in pink but it was mainly a sea of red just saying multicam.
