  • Removing dirt from still images

I have made a horrible mistake. I scanned thousands of old stills from my personal collection with a low-priced scanner. It was a monster undertaking. I could not see these images clearly before they were in my system (a new MacPro 8 core using FCS3 and Photoshop CS4). I now have maybe 750 stills that have unacceptable amounts of dirt etc. on them. I wish I had known about Digital Ice and scanners that use this technology before I began.
As you can imagine, I would prefer not to have to redo these stills (they are all slides). I am new to Photoshop CS4 but I hear there is a way to dramatically clean up images with the problems my stills have. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this technique and could give me advice or
Are there plug-ins or tools in FCP7 that might offer me a viable alternative.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I would do it in Photoshop before importing into FCP. That way you have both the stills and the video fixed. If you fix it in FCP, then the still are still dirty.

Also Photoshop is better equipped for that sort of work.

I agree with Michael. In Photoshop there is a Dust and Scratches filter in the Filter>>Noise section. There are much better professional strength Photoshop filters for this purpose available commercially too.

Okay, I can go with that. Can you suggest any ‘commercial strength’ photoshop filters that would really get the job done?

Here’s a link to a rather nice article on the subject:

In PS CS4. If the dust and scratches filter does what you want in a few tests, then you can create an Action and run it on the entire folder of 750. After that you may need to work on them individually using the Spot Healing brush.

    David Ross Weiss –
I hope you see this post. You responded to a post I placed about removing dirt from still images with an http sending me to an article you thought worth reading on the subject. When I clicked on it – the article was on the extremetech.com web site – I was told there was an error in the http.
I can’t seem to search out the article on that site that you had in mind.
Any help you can offer to find that article would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks very much.

make sure you include that last ‘p’ in the link. Its not highlighted as part of a hyperlink. If you cut and paste the entire link it works fine.
