  • Removing black background from shot

    Hi there…new to FCP.

I have a shot of Mick Jagger dancing in front of a solid black background which I’m trying to overlay on top of a shot of a toilet (don’t ask).

I color corrected the Mick Jagger shot to make the background darker, then I go to “Modify>Composite Mode>Add.” I’ve also used “Modify>Composite Mode>Screen.” This removes the black, but it also makes Mick look transparent. So it looks like the ghost of Mick Jagger dancing inside a toilet, which isn’t quite what I’m after. I tried laying the same Mick shot on three different video tracks but it still looks somewhat ghost-like.

Anyone have any ideas? Doesn’t have to look perfect…I’ll settle for decent. Thanks!

This won’t work in the way you are trying, as Mick will ALSO have black on him, so you will always see through him. Unless you rotoscope a mask around Mick…frame by frame. I wouldn’t recommend FCP for this, I recommend Shake or After Effects.

This is why people GREEN SCREEN footage, so they can key out GREEN. Keying out black won’t work because of shadows and stuff.

Do you have After Effects? Your challenge is to make a decent matte in the black area around Mick. You might be able to use Keylight’s more extensive tools to get to “decent.” As a quick experiment you might try several layers of your color corrected Mick in Screen mode on top of each other. This should get you a thicker Mick.

I sometimes have wishful thinking for transfer modes. Screen mode would always leave transparent areas if the background is anything but black.
