I am new to AE as of this month, but I have logged a bunch of hours in an attempt to figure it out.
I have a video clip of the earth spinning, and I would like to remove the background completely from the clip. It is an entirely black background, and I need to remove it so I can have text go behind it.

Any help on removing the background?

i have found that setting the blending mode to screen does the job.

If the Blending mode is on screen, then when his type goes behind, it will show through the footage as well. If the Earth is spinning in place, you could probably get away with a circle mask on the footage. Maybe toss a .5 feather on it to help integrate it more seamlessly. I don’t know what the footage looks like, but you might even be able to get away with a luma key (effect, keying, luma key). Try to key out darker and play around with the tolerance settings.
    Hope this helps you out,
