  • Removing all transitions at once… This DIDNT work!

Hi, I got this advice from Jim:

“I can’t think of a way to easily remove the transitions but here is a possible work-around.

    1) Set default transition to cross-dissolve with minimum duration (1 frame).
    2) Move playhead to beginning of sequence.
    3) Select all the clips.
    4) Drag all the clips to the canvas and drop them on the “overwrite with transition” overlay.

This will replace all your transitions with a 1 frame cross-dissolve which will effectively look like a pure cut. Again, it won’t actually remove the transitions, but the look will be the same.

    Hope this helps, Jim”

-Seemed like a good idea but for some reason when I do this,

-All the clips are lengthened slightly. Why? And all gaps between clips are lost. For some reason they are all pushed together back to back Please help, this is driving me nuts.

    ACTUALLY:

Does anyone know how to apply a transition to the entire sequence? Rather than overwriting, I could just select a whole bunch of clips, and apply a 1 frame transition to them all at once. Is this possible? I used to be able to do it in Avid, just select all my clips, then double click a transition and it would apply to all of the clips, both ends.

    Nope.

The “Overwrite with Transition” is the way in FCP to apply the same transition to all cuts.

OK but why is FCP removing the spaces between clips? And why the hell is it lengthening them? Whats that all about?

The “Overwrite with Transition” is designed to add an effect on ADJOINING clips.

You should not drop a sequence (or layer) with “gaps” onto this function.

    Fill the gaps with slugs.

Transitions require lengthing of clips during the transition period. It’s a fact of life. Unless you want to shorten your program by the length of the transition. Think iMovie.

Seems like the idea would be to drag them to the canvas as just choose overwrite, not overwrite with transition. But I haven’t tried it.
