I have had the same problem with my Sony TRV-900 for years and use a low-pass filter set for 10 or 11 kHz. Just began recording audio with a separate solid-state recorder ($600) but understand a minidisc recorder ($300) does just as well.

    Try SoundSoap.

A couple of things to try. Use the three band EQ set the gain to the maximum negative and sweep up and down till you notice a reduction (start at around 60Mhz). Soundsoap from Bias Inc usually works well for removing noise. You can do the same with an EQ filter and some knowledge. If you are trying to boost volume levels try to double up the audio clip. That way you can raise each clip less but; get an increase in overall volume.

PS- ask someone who know something about audio. Audio is tough; I have the greatest respect for the audio guys.

Soundsoap works great, but you can overdo it too, you have to be really careful with it.

But, from what I could gather from the QT tidbits about Soundtrack Pro on Apple’s site, it’s gonna have some pretty wizzbang noise reduction.

You need to read this post. Basically you try an isolate the offending noise by boosting it above your intended audio since it is easier to focus on the annoying noise and when you find it and its envelope (its frequency and width) dip the previously boosted frequency until it is gone or acceptable.
