Remove a static background using the differences in the shot
Hello creative people,
I’ve been thinking of a way to remove a moving subject from his background without rotoscoping.
Knowing that in my case, there isn’t any greenscreen.
More important though, knowing that i’m talking about shots with a static camera.Is there a way in Adobe After Effects to tell the software :
– This is the shot of the background with the subject
– This is the same shot with the background only. Without the subject
– Pease (yeah I know, I’m polite with my softwares), AE, could you put out the subject from the first shot using the differences between the two shots ?It seems so easy said this way. So easy that I would be surprise that such a feature doesn’t exist, right ?
PS: When I was a kid, I remember using my webcam with a software that could remove the background from me using this technique
The method was simple : I had to push a button, get away from my background for 5 seconds and then the background was gone once I was back in front of my webcam ! As simply as this. -

Unfortunately it didn’t work well with the footage I had.
Many issues. For exemple : having a subject with a white T-shirt in front of a gray wall. With so, the effects is not doing great.
But I must say that it might come from my camera. I’ve shot with my Sony HXR-MC2000e which compress the rushes in a 1440p resolution. There is a noise on the image due to (I think) the low quality of the camera lens (and of course it’s a fix camera lens !).Got this camera since nearly 10 years now on. It’s maybe time to switch aha !
