Does anyone have any experience setting up what I’d term “remote monitoring” of a field shoot? Essentially so the producer in one city could see and hear what the videographer is shooting in another city. I might have some shoots coming up that I will not be able to attend.

Thanks for the info or – please recommend the proper forum if this isn’t it.

    Thanks!

    Hi, Dennis!

This is not really my area of expertise, but since you have had no replies as of yet, I thought I’d throw out a couple of ideas.

The ideal way to do this would be to have streaming capability from your camera. Lacking that you could feed the camera to a computer that would stream. I don’t know the particulars about any of that but it seems that it would mean being somewhere where you have reliable internet and power to the computer. Perhaps it’s possible to do it all with an iPad or laptop and without wi-fi, I don’t know. Those are the areas I would Google to find more info.

Another possible way that I HAVE done a couple of times in the past is to use Facetime on an iPhone or iPad. You can’t send the exact picture from your video camera to it but you can show the remote person the shot on the monitor or just point the iPhone at the scene to show them the general idea. You can talk using Facetime to make any necessary adjustments. It’s not quite like having the remote person see everything that’s going on but I have successfully worked with producers in New York and LA using this method.

    Have fun!

    Rob

    Thanks Rob,

Both good ideas. FB would be pretty easy. Hoping for a gizmo-gadget to attach to the camera or monitor output. Will explore a couple of other forums.
