I will be helping set up a remote edit system for a client. I will not be editing on the system, but will be working on the project from my system. Basically they will do the offline and I will finish the project and do the mastering.

I am thinking of having them purchase Remote Desktop so that I can access there system and do basic house keeping or maybe even re-link media files if need be. I have never used Remote Desktop before, but it looks like it could be a good tool. I don’t want to edit remotely, it would just be nice to log onto the remote system and resolve conflicts in they come up.

My question is, are there any issues working with Remote Desktop and FCP and has anyone ever tried it?

    Thanks for your input.

I’ve actually set up a similar system… We have Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) on both the FCP-systems at work. It works GREAT to do simpler things from a remote machine. I’ve even captured video from out BetaSP-deck 🙂

The only “issue” I encounterd was or bigger FCP suite has a dual monitor setup, which in ARD works, but you get all the 2-screen-space scaled down to 3/4 of a PowerBook screen (very tiny). Aside from that, everything works. I just switch resolution when doing alot of remote work. Great to be able to, for instance, convert video locally on a system when out of the office.

Hey thanks for your response. I guess for $300 it is worth a try.

    Jared,

We’re just dipping our toe into the water on this, but so far it looks very promising. We’re currently working with two editors off-site and use this to transfer files, projects, etc. I’m hearing nothing but good things from the assistants who are using it.

Hi, I’m trying to link between my boss’ Mac OS X and mine to share FCP files. She is in Miami and I frequently have to fly there to edit. We are looking at Apple Remote Desktop 3 to solve the issue of being in different cities (and to cut down on the cost of flights), and I was wondering if the file uploading from one comp to another is really long or not. I wish the My Book World would cover Macs through the Mionet software, but it doesn’t. Is the Remote Desktop going to allow me to transfer movie files? Mark, I know your post is from a long time ago, but did this system work for you? I guess if this doesn’t work, I will just wait for FCP Server to make its debut. But it would be nice to have options in the meantime. I’ve also read about Timbuktu Pro. Help?!? Thanks.
