I’m planning to setup a workflow, with my assistant works at home most of the time, where is tens of kilos away from my workhouse. He got the same version of Mac Resolve as mine, but installed on MBP with smaller diskraid. The ideal result with this workflow is he can do all the job for me remotely, except color grading.

Most of my projects is feature film, work with scanned dpx or other digital camera dpx files, or r3d files.

Anyone got same kind of experiences please describe your workflow.

    Thanks in advance.

Feature film DPX is a hefty chunk of data. If your assistant is not doing any grading work maybe you can just set up a VNC connection to your studio? That way you can keep all the footage on site.

VNC was a choice, but VNC is not fast enough for comform job, especially when there’s lots of VFX shots which got almost no TC info, then UI response speed is quite important.

I’m thinking about a workflow like this, just the rough idea

Generate proxies for all materials with quarter resolution, most of time we have 3-4 Terabytes of source materials for conforming, so the proxy version will be less than 300G with less than 30MBps for realtime playback, that’s not a heavy burden for an assistant station.
Setup a project on assistant station, with same settings and directory structures as on main one.

So, after my assistant finish conforming remotely, he just transfer the project package to me, then I’m ready for roll.

    Is that a reasonable design?

    Hi Nick,
An easy solution would be if your assistant could set up the project on his Resolve, save the project, and email the project file to you. If you have the same media in your systems media pool, loading his project file should link up with the media, and your off to the races.
    Good Luck…

Hi, Ronald. That was part of the plan, but assistant station is not as powerful as main station. As last post, I’m thinking about generate proxy with same structure and send files to assistant. Will that work?

Check out the Remote grading section of the Resolve user manual. You can consider this like a remote grade but not always live. When the assistant has finished with the setup, using the low res images or proxies, they can save the project file as Ronald says and send to you on the big system. You just need to deselect proxy to go back to the high res source clips.

Hi, Peter. This is all I got after go through the remote grading part of the manual.

“Currently, the remote grading feature supports only color correction and does not allow editing or conforming during a session”

    Is there any misunderstanding?

    Help still needed.

    Nick
