  • Relink Render Files – is this possible?

Posted by Dustin Parsons on May 11, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I’m trying get some definitive answers on relinking render files – I’ve searched a ton of forums but most people’s problems are much more complicated than mine so I’m hoping there’s a solution for my particular workflow.

    Here’s my workflow:
    • create a production folder on my internal hard drive that will contain the FCP Project, all FCP generated folders, and all media associated with the project (see image below)

    • transfer footage from an external footage archive drive to the 02 – Media folder on my internal hard drive
    • when I finish the production I delete the footage from the 02 – Media folder – because I have it archived on an external hard drive
    • I then backup my production folder (everything except the footage) to an external production archive drive where I keep all of my productions

The problem I run into is, if I need to hop back on a production and make a minor change I typically don’t want to transfer all the footage back onto my internal hard drive (it takes a while) so I just transfer the production folder back to my internal hard drive and hook up the footage archive drive via Firewire 800. When I do this, I find it impossible for FCP to relink my render files despite the fact that I have my Video Render files and Audio Render files going to the exact same place as before (the production folder on my internal hard drive). If I go to File > Relink Media I am not even given the option of choosing to relink the render files (the button is greyed out).

With my workflow, does anyone know if there is a way I can relink the render files?

Sorry if this specific question has already been answered, I’ll accept a link to that thread if is has.

    Thanks!

That seems more complicated than at needs to be at first glance.

I keep everything together on my RAID during a project.

When I archive it, EVERYTHING gets backed up to its own folder on another drive. I actually DELETE the render folder though. Sometimes keeping renders is a bad thing.

It might be because FCP wants to see footage in the 02_Media folder. But you reconnect instead to the backup drive…and because of that, a connection FCP had was broken…and because of that, the render files don’t connect right either.

FCP stinks when it comes to media management…keeping track of assets. The connections are fragile. Change one thing…bam!

It’s really not that complicated – all footage is kept on an external drive dedicated to storing footage and all projects are on an external drive dedicated to storing projects. The reason I split the footage and projects up is because I typically have to pull footage from multiple shoots for one production – so if I were to archive all footage used in a production with the project file and other media I might have 5 duplicates of the same footage across 5 projects, and that takes up a lot of unnecessary space.

Thanks for the suggestion though! I would definitely work like you if I could.

Yeah, I was afraid of that…

Seems like something the FCP community would have found a workaround for by now though – we’ve had these problems for quite some time now. Hopefully FCP X addresses these issues.
