  • relationship between z axis and focus distance

    Hello All,
Does anyone know what the exact relationship between the position of a layer on the z-axis and the focus distance of an After FX camera (which is measured in pixels). At the moment I’m judging focus by eye but it would be good to me a bit more scientific about it!
    Thanks very much
    Martin

Select camera, hit “a” twice. You’ll find “focus distance”

That’s all the science you need. The layers that are exactly that far from the camera are in focus.

You may already be doing this, but it helps to use a left, right or top view. As you adjust the focus distance you can see it moving closer to or farther away from the camera. When you see the focal plane touch the target layer, optimum focus is achieved.

There are also some expressions that you can use to attach the focus distance to a null. Then you can move the null around whenever you need to change the focus distance.
