Being an FCP newbie I don’t have a complete answer for the questioner below who is making the move to FCP from Sony Vegas. But it brings up a related question: Vegas allows you to choose the profile of a transition. That is, it allows you to have the transition execute in a direct, linear fashion. Or you can have it start slowly and then finish quickly. etc. etc. There are about eight transition profiles to choose. The variations are subtle but they sometimes (to my eye) make the difference between a transition that looks a bit mechanical and one that has the perfect flow. I haven’t found anything like that in FCP. Have I not been looking hard enough or is this a place where Sony Vegas trumps FCP?

There are some third party transitions with these options.
But for a simple dissolve, you can set keyframes for the transparency of the upper layer and adjust the keyframes to be smooth Beziers. Note that most of FCP’s transitions are not emulated as effects, they can only be applied between adjacent clips.
It’s a silly workaround for something many of us took for granted in other NLEs. Might someday get addressed but, honestly, I’ve never really needed this kind of control.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
