    Good day All,

Does anybody know of a manufacturer still producing reel-to-reel tape recorders? The institution I work with has a considerable number of archival recordings to transfer and all our reel to reel machines are slowly dying. I’ve already picked the second-hand stores clean in my area and although I know there are some on e-bay, if I could get a new one, it would probably serve us longer.

    Thanks,

    Marc

    [Marc] ” if I could get a new one…”

Maybe from some warehouse’s old stock somewhere.

And there are lots of choices, so you need to be specific

    1/4″ half-track stereo?
    1/4″ quarter-track stereo?
    1/4″ Full-track mono?
    1/2″ multi-track ?
    1″ multi-track ?
    2″ multi-track ?

Sounds like you just need to contact some recording studios which may have some of these fine old machines sitting around.

Hello Marc and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum,

I have several 1/4″ reel to reel decks here that stay in service for just this reason. If you get no results from your search, let me know. If the speed and tracks match, I can help you.

Two years ago I transferred about 20 CASES (10-12 reels per case), some one sided, some two sided) and did substantial noise reduction on them for a University in the mid-west. These were tapes used as teaching modules. The project took me from February to December of 2006. I did 4-6 hours per week. A little like eating an elephant.

I also have non-timecode DAT machines.

    Regards,

    Ty (audio museum) Ford

Thank you both. I found a stereo repair shop that can still source belt kits for both my Sony TC-377 which I need for its 1 7/8 speed and my Dokorders so if I get these machines back in working order I should be OK for a while.

Ah, the fun of “archival material”.

    FYI,

My speeds don’t go that low.

    Yeah, but you’re still young.

    You’ll slow down eventually.
