  • Reel Numbers – Source Clip File Pathname

Posted by Craig Harris on February 24, 2011 at 10:31 pm

I am having an impossible time getting R3D files to load in DaVinci with EDL’s sent from FCP. My workflow is correct. The file names haven’t changed (using QT’s in FCP – exporting EDL and relinking in Resolve) and each camera has it’s own timecode.

Monkey Extract can translate the EDL from FCP correctly, but Resolve is having a hard time placing and connecting the clips.

Is there a specific formula for the ‘Source Clip File Pathname’ when working with R3D files and FCP?

    Kindly,
    Craig

I am using Quicktime Pro Res files for the offline. Not the R3D proxies.

The problem is that when exporting FCP edls, (assuming cmx3600) the reel numbers are only 8 characters long whilst R3d file names are much longer, therefore conforming issues galore can occur.
What you need to do is export the edl from FCP with “file names in notes” checked.

Back in resolve make sure reel number support is checked and leave the default /%R/%D (see the manual for more details about that) and most importantly on the settings tab, check “use reel numbers from edl notes”

Every second day we are conforming FCP edls, as long as the filenames don’t change from camera original,
Resolve can seamlessly conform R3d edls from FCP

Remember to render your final grade with “use source file name” on the render page and for a little organization use /Volumes/ “%L” / in your render file path, that will place the rendered clips in a folder using the source file name.

    Thanks for the input.
I’ve done all the above but it’s still not connecting anything. Very strange.

Is it possible the the ‘.mov’ extension from my offline files is causing the problem?

Could we see a few lines from your EDL? It’s tough to troubleshoot without any info.

Can you post a screen grab of your edl, just the first 10 events or so..

    Edl looks fine,
Ok I’m assuming the R3d files are in the same original red created folder structure where 1folder up from the r3d is named the same as the actual file, but in case it’s not.. Try this
In resolve in config, change using reel number assit to /%R*

Use the test functionto see if it pulls the reel number from the file name, a quick way of doing this is in the deck page.
Goto deck page and choose record tab,
Find an r3d file from your job and click it as if you were going to record it to tape, but instead select the file name shown, select the entire line and then apple copy,
Go back to config page and in using reel number assist paste the file path into test and see if the reel number shows up?!
One more thing to check is in the source page that the red setting is using time of day timecode not edge,
    Your edl looks like TODcode!

    Hope this helps
