I was having a discussion today with a colleague (a camera assistant and DIT) about naming conventions for reel names (exciting hey?)

Pretty much everything we shoot is tapeless so the folders clips are saved into become the eventual reel names in FCP.

This is what we decided on:
    A01YYMMDD

    ‘A’ being camera A, ’01’ being reel 01 obviously.

I like this convention because it means there can never be any argument over what to call the reel, but of course it does mean that you don’t know what’s on the reel without actually previewing the files or referring to a camera report.
RED cameras use a similar naming convention with the addition of two random letters at the end. Maybe the ideal reelname would include letters at the end that gave an idea of the content/project.
For example, if we’re shooting Lord of the Rings we could use A01YYMMDDLOTR

I wondered what other people were using for their reel names. Do you follow the old conventions or do you use something more descriptive.

Apologies for the nerdiness of this post! It’s good to get an idea of what structure other people are taking, if any.

    Thanks,
    Alex

Maybe I’m being overly cautious, but I like to keep reel names eight characters or under, for compatibility with EDL limitations.
Otherwise, it’s really a matter of personal preference. My main consideration is how things will sort within FCP.
