reel from many sources – help?
Hello,
I am cutting together a reel in FCP from different many video clips.I have various video files that were rendered as lower field first, as well as Media 100 video files that are upper field first. And then there are others that are not field rendered at all. There are different compressions/codecs too: Animation from After Effects, M100, Avid, etc. Also the clips are different aspect ratios (640×480, 720×486, 720×480, 720×540, 960×540). To complicate things, some files were rendered at 29.97 and others at 24 and 30fps.

You can put all kinds of media in one timeline if yu don’t mind rendering almost every single time you make an edit. However, most FCP users would capture or convert all the media to one single format to make the editing process smoother and easier.

I think you decide on the best format you can deal with Disk drive speed wise.. i.e. uncompressed 10 bit would look better than DV for example… Use compressor to get them to that format, then edit them in the same sequence setting in FCP.
Open the clips all in Compressor and choose the “advanced format conversion” in the settings for the export, and get them all to the same format… Make your life a bit easier by creating a folder for these clips on your fastest scratch disk, and then choose file/import/folder… to get them all imported into FCP with one move.
Sorry this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but it’s what you’d need to do in FCP. Just can’t mix formats really easily in FCP…s

Thanks Jerry. So I guess Compressor can convert all these different files.
Including frame rates and scaling?
Is the best size for FCP 720×486?
Would there be any advantage to doing the scaling + rendering in AfterEffects instead of Compressor (especially if I have the original AE project)? Or would Compressor do the best job?
Still confused why FCP seemed to scale the 640×480 clip all around in the canvas window, while the 720×480 clip was not scaled vertically. In other words, the 2 clips next to each other in the timeline, both 480 pix high, appeared as different pixel heights, even after rendering. Any idea why?

Thanks David. I see from Jerry’s response that I should use Compressor and unify everything to make things smoother, which seems to be your advice as well. I asked him a couple of follow up questions. Feel free to chime in with other tips or suggestions.

Frame rates are going to be a problem maybe… I don’t do a lot of that at all, other than removing redundant fields in pulldown patterns. Give it a try with a single clip that needs to have a frame rate conversion done, and see what the results are. Post back about that…
