Reducing render times?
Alright so I know that to drastically reduce render times I could simply lower the quality of the output file, but my question is about rendering at the same quality as I normally do, or higher depending on if I can reduce the amount of time it takes to render, and reducing the time it takes to render.
I’ve read sony Vegas renders MP4 files faster because it’s render system works best at those files.
I record in AVI format, or raw footage, and when I render the quality is reduced, because I try to reduce the render time. It takes me ~1.5 – 2 hours to render a 10-15 minute video, rendering in the MP4 file at 60 FPS 720p 12-14 Million kbps. I’m wondering if I rendered an MP4 file would it reduce the render time? I can have mirillis action record in MP4.

So I know it’s important to know what GPU someone has, but the fact that nothing I mentioned has to with it, I’m not sure why I need to post it. I render using my CPU, so my GPU isn’t important for this. I just wanted to know if I rendered an input file that’s an MP4 would it decrease the render time compared to if I rendered an input file that’s an AVI file.

It sounds like you are recording your video in an uncompressed format. If so, it is very large. Recording in an mp4 format will compress the file. It will probably compress it a lot more than it is today. Sony Vegas will have a lot less data to brighten or color correct or whatever it is doing, and it will be far faster when rendering the final output file.

The amount of time to encode depends on your CPU+GPU speed. When you render, you are rendering (encoding) to a specific video type like AVC/H.264 or MPEG-2 (a codec). Each encoder is unique and different and some are faster than others. Generally the more highly compressed a codec format is the slower it encodes.
MP4 is not an encode type, but is rather just a generic file container. I’ll assume when you reference MP4 you are probably talking about AVC/H.264 video.
There are two AVC MP4 encoders in Vegas. Mainconcept and Sony AVC. Sony AVC is the faster of the two when using CPU. Mainconcept will generally have better final quality but depending on bitrate the difference may not be visible to the eye. These two encoders, unlike all others, do have options to use your GPU for helping to speed up file encoding. Not so much for Sony AVC, but Mainconcept can be much faster *IF* and only if it supports your GPU. Mainconcept only supports older GPUs.
