  • Reduce poly count for rigging, is it possible?

Posted by Simon Hutchinson on January 26, 2009 at 3:40 pm

    Hi there,

I have a character i wish to rig but the model has a high poly count which is making the rigging process almost impossible. Is there a way that I can reduce the number of polygons in a uniform manner so as to make the job easier?

    many thanks in advance.

    Jethro.

There is a poly reduction tool. Its in with the deformers.

The short answer is no. There is a poly reduction object as Randy mentioned, but the geometry it produces is not at all conducive to character animation.

If the model has good topology, OTOH, it might not be that painful to do it by hand. Go into edge mode and use the edge loop selection tool and the dissolve command to eliminate excess geometry.

Another option is to build a lower polygon mesh around the one you’re using. To do that turn on polygon (and maybe point) snapping and then use the create polygon tool in quadrangle strip mode to draw a new model over the old one (starting out with an empty polygon object).
