Posted by Francisco Delacruz on April 4, 2009 at 12:52 amHello, i’m a first time user on Sony Vegas platinum 9.0.
I made a small video on a road recording another car and the audio in the video seems to spike when it hears the wind noise. sounds pretty nasty. how can i reduce that sound? i tried lowering the volume of that layer and ican still hear it. i dont mind having that sound i just dont like it spiking from channel to channel. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

April 4, 2009 at 2:24 amYou really need an audio noise reduction plugin to
reduce such wind noise properly…..
Sony noise reduction plugin and SoundSoap are two good
options you can look at.Steve Rhoden

April 4, 2009 at 4:03 amYou can also try using the Track EQ that’s already on all of the audio tracks. The first point is set for Low Shelf, which is what you want. Set the Frequency (Hz) to 300 and the Gain (dB) to –Inf (all the way to the left). Now listen to a loop of your audio and adjust the frequency to filter more or less of the wind rumble.
Wind is broadband noise across all frequencies so to really get rid of it you will need a plug-in as Steve suggested. BIAS SoundSoap 2 is inexpensive, easy to use, and does a pretty decent job of noise reduction in general. A killer tool is iZotope RX but that is probably more than you want to spend.

April 4, 2009 at 7:46 pmUnfortunately, there is no trial version of BIAS SoundSoap 2 available. So I downloaded the trial version of Soundsoap pro. But it doesn’t appear as a plugin in Vegas and not as a standalone program. How can I get this trial version to work?
And what about Soundbooth CS4 (Adobe). Would that program do well in noise reduction (like wind)?

Just use the 14-day trial for the original SoundSoap. If it works, I can assure you that SoundSoap 2 will only work better. The big difference is that SoundSoap 2 has a click & crackle remover and audio enhancer. Otherwise the two are the same.
Wind is particularly difficult to remove because it changes over time unlike tape hiss or and air conditioning unit which is a steady broadband noise. So don’t be surprised if you don’t get good results. It all depends on how much the wind sound changes during your recording. You may have to treat smaller parts with different settings to get acceptable results. Good luck.

April 6, 2009 at 8:25 amThanks. But how do I get Soundsoap Pro to work within Vegas. Just placing the file in the folder with other (audio) vst plugins doesn’t work

April 6, 2009 at 12:26 pmI assume you have to run the installer that came with it and have it install itself however it wants. You shouldn’t have to manually place anything in the VST folder (although I haven’t tried SoundSoap Pro so I don’t know for sure but SoundSoap 2 was an automated install)

April 6, 2009 at 4:37 pmYes. I did run the .exe file…
Buying Soundsoap2 is also not an easy option, since the purchase page directs me to a local dealer who doesn’t seems to sell soundsoap2…

April 6, 2009 at 6:50 pmYou should be able to buy it from the BIAS Online Store. (at least I can) Go to the main BIAS site and select Products | SoundSoap and then on the SoundSoap page press the Buy Now button.

April 6, 2009 at 7:07 pmYes, I found out that I’m able to buy if I say that I’m living in the US. But when I’m honest about my place of living, I can’t buy anymore…
Thanks for your help.Theo

April 7, 2009 at 8:23 amDid you get it installed properly?
The installation should be automatic, which afterwards
should only ask you which folder you want the VST file
to be placed.Steve Rhoden
