  • Reduce interlace flicker when progressive to interlaced ?

    Hello all!

I´ve shooted a wedding with one 60D, and two T2i(550D)
All three cameras was shooting in 30p 1920×1080.

I´ve edited all my footage in sony vegas pro 11 using this project properties:
    1920×1080 | Progressive | NTSC 29,97 | 8-bit | Best | Gaussian | Blend Felds | Ajust source media…

    NOW… it´s time to render…
I always use Architect to authoring DVDs and Blurays.
Architect only let me choose: 23… 24 progressive. 25 (not for me in Brazil) or 29,97 interlaced. Where is the 30 progressive!?
Remember, my footage and edition was 30 progressive.

    So….

    1. I´ve tryied render 30 progressive… ok… but Architect must re-recompress the video.

    2. I´ve tryied change project properties to UpperField and render 29,97 interlaced… bad! some flicker appears when using NewBlueFX ColorFast plugin.

    3. I change all video events from progressive to Upper field first, and I selected the box Reduce Interlace Flicker… changed project properties to UpperField and… Great! Architect doesn´t have to re-compress… but the render time increase significantly.

Am I missing something? Is there some way more easy to render my Canon footage to burn a Bluray FullHD in Architect?

    Thanks!

30p did not exist when DVD’s were invented. Your choices are 60i, 50i, and 24p if you are delivering on DVD. I would pick 60i since both fields will contain the same progressive frame you will never see the difference. You could also deliver 24p but some scenes may have non-smooth/jerky pans since you didn’t shoot for 24p.

Hi John, thanks for your help!

If I understood, my better choice is choose 29,97 interlaced in DVD Archtect … right.

But in Vegas Pro, what do I have to choose…?

In event properties: Progressive or Upperfield?
In project properties: Progressive or Upperfield?
In render settings: Progressive or Upperfield?

[Márcio Nascimento] “In event properties: Progressive or Upperfield?”

Event properties should ALWAYS reflect the true properties of the media in the event. If the media is progressive it should be progressive. You should almost never have to change this since Vegas usually get’s it correct.

[Márcio Nascimento] “In project properties: Progressive or Upperfield?”

For best playback, keep the project properties the same as the media in your project. If your media is progressive, keep your project progressive.

[Márcio Nascimento] “In render settings: Progressive or Upperfield?”

Render settings should be set to the attributes that you need your delivery format to be. Just use the DVD Architect MPEG2 templates which I believe are Upper Field first.

    Thanks John,

But the way I “won the fight” with Vegas and Architect was changing all to Upperfield and turning on the Reduce interlace flicker of all video events.

    My configuration now is:
Event Properties: Reduce interlace flicker | Upper Field
    Project Properties: Upper Field
    Render Settings: Upper Field
    Architect Properties: 29,97 interlaced

I think it is one more big mistery in video editing, isn´t it?

Keeping it all consistent will work as well. I was just trying to keep it progressive until it absolutely needed to get interlaced… but whatever works is what you should use. 😉

Your choices are 60i, 50i, and 24p if you are delivering on DVD.

So shooting 24p in the first place may be a better option than 60i? Does a 24p DVD have fewer artifacts than a 60i DVD?

[John Quick] “So shooting 24p in the first place may be a better option than 60i? Does a 24p DVD have fewer artifacts than a 60i DVD?”

I don’t know what you mean by “artifacts” but shooting 24p takes a different approach to shooting. You have to pan slower because the frame rate is slower otherwise your pans will be jerky. If you are shooting fast moving objects you may get more motion blur than you would like because 60i captures 60 events per second instead of 24. So simply shooting 24p because it’s “p” is not a always smart choice. It has it’s own set of challenges.
