  • Reduce interlace flicker requires recompresing file?

Posted by Paul Gregory on October 26, 2010 at 3:44 am

I imported a MPEG2 progressive wide screen file in DVDA & added a simple menu. I clicked the Optimize DVD button & it tells me that my file will easily fit on a disk but that the MPEG2 file will need to be re compressed. It says that that the reason it will recommpress is that I have the ‘reduce interlace flicker’ flag on & that I can turn if off generals tab it won’t need recompressed. I turn this flag off on 2 menu pages but it still says that it will recommpress. Is there some place else that that I also need to alter?

    Thanks in advance

That doesn’t make any sense at all since Reduce Interlace Flicker in DVD Architect only applies to the menu pages and not the video content on the DVD. I’ve never seen this before and I always have Reduce Interlace Flicker on for all my DVD menus.

You said that you imported a “progressive” MPEG2 file. Was is 23.970fps? If not, that’s your problem. DVD’s only support progressive footage that is 24p. Every other frame rate must be interlaced or else it will need to be recompressed to comply with the DVD spec.

The file was Pal 25fps. If DVD’s will only play a progressive file how do I select a 24P file & should it be able to play in any machine/media player?

    Thanks in advance

I’m sorry if I may have confused you. DVD’s will play 25fps interlaced (PAL), 29.97fps interlaced (NTSC), and 23.976fps progressive. If you are creating a PAL DVD you should render your MPEG2 file as PAL 25fps interlaced to be compliant.
