RED WORKFLOW – Offline to Online R3D
Posted by Craig Harris on October 31, 2010 at 7:59 pmWhen using Final Cut Pro, what is the best workflow for DaVinci if you want to grade with the R3D files? How would you reconnect the offline files (Pro Res) to the R3D which would be used in the EDL.
Please note: This workflow can not include the FCP log & transfer mode of the R3D files.
Thanks.

October 31, 2010 at 9:32 pmYou should check that either your clip names or pro-res file names are the same as the R3D files. If that’s the case, you’ll have an easy time. If someone renamed both the clip names and the pro-res filenames you’re going to have a bit of a hard time.
1. Export an EDL of your cut. Enable either clip names or file names in the comments (enable the one that has the same name as R3D)
2. In DaVinci settings mark the box that says “get reel name from EDL comments”
3. Add only your R3D to media pool
4. Load your EDL
Resolve will then figure everything out.
If your file names are all screwed up, as far as I know Resolve will still try to place the clips by their timecode, and display many many conflicts. You can then spend a bit of time going through the timeline and resolve every conflict manually. It’s a pain in the ass but as far as I know the only way to deal with things if you lost the correct naming conventions.

October 31, 2010 at 10:36 pmHello, You should use clipfinder.
Export xml sequence from FCP.
Open menu “confrom FCP XML sequence” in clipfinder (free soft)
show it where the R3D files are
Export xml to FCPCreate an EDLfrom this conformed R3D sequence in final cut
It works perfectly…

October 31, 2010 at 10:50 pmI bet it does but I’m not sure if its necessary. I’ve used Clipfinder a lot when working with FCP > RedCineX > Color, but generally you don’t even need it when using Resolve.

November 1, 2010 at 5:59 pmIs this the same process you’d use if you were editing with proxies and not prores files?
Or does the proxy suffix (like _m) screw things up?

November 1, 2010 at 6:05 pmI’ve tried the the workflow you’ve suggested Vladimir and I can’t get it to work.
Every time, I get an error when trying to import the EDL. The error reads “FAILED TO COPY EDL EVENT LIST TO THE VIDEO-TRACK’S EVENT LIST.” It is also time consuming to import each R3D file individually. Is there a way to extract all the R3D files from a root folder without having to go in each take folder? Thanks,

November 2, 2010 at 12:09 pmI believe that you’d want to select your root R3D directory folder and select “add folder and subfolders into media pool” from the right click menu. That should add all r3d files.
As far as EDL error, I’m not sure. I would make sure that you have simplified your timeline to 1 video track for taking into DaVinci. Remove all effects besides dissolves, as those won’t be understood. I have also been setting “target video track only” in the EDL export (making sure my target video track is the one with all the video on it). Oh and make sure your format is CMX3600.
That should clear up any problems Resolve would have with your EDLs.

April 1, 2011 at 8:01 pmI ran across this recently and took the EDL into text edit and removed the _M and .mov in each event. (There is a way to do this automatically, but it’s a bit long to explain here).
The EDL worked perfectly in Resolve. Reconnected to the R3D file!
