Turn up your Memory Cache on Still Images. I’m getting the same issue here with FCP 5.0.2 whereby I’ve had to turn up my Still Memory Cache all the way to 50% for project that only have 20 stills and graphics. Something is a bit screwy with that feature of FCP 5.0.2 and I’ve reported to Apple. You should send in a bug report as well if that does turn out to be the issue.

I have whacked up my cache from 50% to 100% – makes no difference – I cannot seem to do anything very much without getting a red window with message “Display Unavailable. Close and reopen window to restore”

My files become unusuable after this message …. what is this all about!!
