  • RED resolution bug or feature??

Posted by Michael Stirling on October 18, 2010 at 5:30 pm

    Hi

I’ve noticed that when importing a RED file into the media pool it comes with a resolution relative to the Decode Quality in the Source page of Config.

ie. If the decode is set to quarter good res. and you import a 4K RED clip will read as 1024×576 in the Media Pool and in the Clip Info panel. It will ALWAYS show as this size even if the Decoder size is subsequently put up to Full Res Premium and if the project is saved and reopened etc etc.

So, my questions are – Is it displaying the clip resolution INFO incorrectly? or is the file actually imported at the lower size? Is there a useful point to this I’m missing?

    Thanks
    Mike

I found the same issue and I think its the resolution you are seeing as when you go to render that resolution is there also.

For a work around set it to full res premium to begin with then once you have a timeline built go back and reset it to quarter res good and you should get realtime playback without any issues.

    Hope that helps.

The file will be read at your current decode setting irrespective of what is shown in the media pool.

Resolve even supports clips with mixed resolution, e.g. a 4K DPX sequence with 2K DPX files for some sections. So don’t worry about the resolution you see in the Media Pool.

It is recommended to use Quarter Res (for CPU only decodes), or Half Res (for Rocket systems) when adding the clips in the Media Pool.

    thanks for the replies.

Sorry to be really stupid but why is it recommended to IMPORT at Quarter res (I don’t have a rocket) and not follow the workflow Danny suggested of bringing in a full res timeline THEN decoding lower for playback. That way all the dialogues show the correct res.

I did the same thing. I liked seeing the the actual resolutions of each file. I too do not have a red rocket card and playback performance is not important at this stage. I use the highest settings, conform the material and render out 2k dpx’s for color correction.

I do change the performance just before the render to do my conform check against the offline.. This makes it easier to get around the time line. I then change it back to max for the render / debayer.

I apply the same workflow as you Darin, just to be sure.

Surely if the res displayed in the media pool for any other type of media is actually what it is then the same rules apply to Red Footage??

My HD .dpx doesn’t say 1024×576 even if its 1920×1080.

I’d recommend that workflow Michael as it doesn’t take any more time to sort out and gives you peace of mind.

    thanks everyone

I guess the answer to the subject line is Bug. It is important to me to get accurate information from Info dialogs (strange of me I know) so I’ll follow the workflow of having the Decoder set to Full when importing RED footage.

    Hi Mike,

The import feature doesn’t really care about the size of your clips. It will just apply a fraction respective to your initial media.

Say your rushes are 4K, just go to 1/4 res for grading. Switch back to your debayering preference for final render.

If you have mixed clips, say 2K hi-fps and 4K, just adjust the clips independently by right clicking them.

I can debayer 4K to DPX, but can’t do 4K to quicktime, the system doesn’t allow it. (Digital Powerhouse delay thing.)

But then again, I’m on a 2008 macpro. Curious to hear if others experience that though.

    Best, 😉

    Will
