    Cow Masters,

I think I have a misconception on using Red Proxies for features offline. On a feature, to avoid rendering all dailies to ProRes first, I thought you could do a simple cuts EDL with the proxies, then take the timeline for each reel and Log and Transfer the Red media direct into Color (minimal transfer times); color correct, then render each reel out to say 1080 uncompressed (at around 6:1 render times). That way we render only once.

Is there a problem with using proxies only in offline? I’m told when we try to Log and Transfer the Proxies’ EDL, FCP asks for a tape to be inserted as if it is doing a batch capture instead of sending the Red Raw with a QT wrapper into Color. What are we doing wrong? What problems do long format features present in media managing the proxies?

    Thanks, Film Joe

First off, check out the RED FCS2 Whitepaper on the RED support page.

Next, technically you need to import the R3D files using the Native setting in Log and Transfer. This will re-wrap the R3D file so it will connect properly throughout the workflow.

If you use the re-wrapped proxy files, then everything should work right. Just follow the steps in the RED FCS2 Whitepaper.
