    Hi there

Looking for some feedback/problems/suggestions on our suggested workflow.

We are about to shoot a feature film on RED camera. The shoot will mainly take place in the day and the onset Data Wrangtler will transcode the rushes on set to Quick Times, and will apply TC and File name burn ins and will provide an ALE.

The cutting room will then receive the rushes in the evening and import the QT’s into the avid (possibly Media Composer 3.5) over night. The picture rushes will then be sync to the digital audio files in the morning. Later on down the line, there is a possibility that there will be screenings so a conform will happen at some stage.
I wanted to check to see if anyone else had imported QT’s direct instead of converting to .mfx files, and if they had encountered any problems. I am presuming that if we go down this line the meta data wont be there and that the ALE file will be useless. Ideally I would like the Data Wrangler to provide .mfx files and were told this wouldn’t be possible, and our Producer has said that importing QT’s straight into th Avid has worked perfectly well on his last few films.

Any feed back would be greatly received

    thanks
    ZOE

I don’t know why you wouldn’t go MXF directly if you have the chance as it will cut down the overall transcode/import process by half as well as not double the number of hard drives.

That being said, Avid QT wrapped DNxHD was the first method by which RED and Avid worked so it is a known method – be sure to import the ALE first, then batch import the QT files into it fort all the metadata preservation goodness.

    Hi Michael

Thanks for your reply, personally I would prefer to get .mxf files as I appreciate that valuable time could be saved, however the Producer really wants to go down the QT route as this method has proved faltless to his productions in the past. However i will mention that valuable cash could be saved with less harddrives being bought and see what is said.

    Thank you again
