Red light ruining my shots.
I recently shot a band with 2 Canon HX A1s and a Sony VX2100. We shot everything in SD. I asked the lighting guy a week before the show not to program red into the lighting show, but he did anyway. Now all the “red” shots look awful. It looks like interlace combing, only vertical. I’ve tried re-ingesting but it didn’t help. Is there anything I can do to clean this up? It is nearly impossible to cut around. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oy vey. Yeah, DV and HDV do not handle bright reds well at all. Magic Bullet Frames has a deartifactoer that does a very good job with repairing your reds. I haven’t used it for several version, and at the time the renders times were very very high. It would take about an hour to each minute of video to deartifact. Grant it, one of the new features they’ve been touting is a more efficient engine that renders much faster, but I haven’t tried the newest version so I can’t speak for the render speed there.

Well that is the closest i’ve gotten to an answer. Thank you so much. I’ve looked into that software, but its just not in the budget right now. I graduated last year and I’m still in my first year of my own production company. Still paying off business and student loans.
Would there be a similar type of filter in one of the program bundled in FC Studio? Maybe Motion or Color could help?

I believe Nattress also makes a deartifacting filter, but it’s also not free, and I’ve never used it.

Not sure if this is your exact issue but I ran into a similar problem last year on a shot with a kid wearing a bright red shirt. The shot looked okay in NTSC, but anytime I would use Magic Bullet on the shot, the shirt would instantly turn into red, vertical Lego blocks. Really bad.
Since you have shot in the MiniDV codec, use the “color smoothing 4:1:1” filter in FCP. It’s in your Effects tab, in the Key folder. It should help. It won’t eliminate all of the artifacts but it should smooth them out and knock them down.
It worked really well on my show.

I have used the Nattress Chroma smoothing filter on artifacted reds and it helps enormously
