RED in QT wrapper
Posted by Tim Farrell on February 8, 2011 at 7:15 amCan you import RED in quicktime wrapper?
Works OK in Color but not seeing the .mov file in Resolve when I browse the media storage.
Thanks,
Tim

February 9, 2011 at 1:06 amWhat reason would you want to use the RED proxy mov’s? Lower res because of the wavelet compression? If so consider using Resolves proxies, either realtime proxies (OFP) or the proxy manager for pre rendered proxies.
So far I’ve not needed to use either so can’t speak about the practicalities of R3D’s and proxies.

February 9, 2011 at 10:14 pmIt’s just one shot, where I don’t have access to the original r3d file.
It’s not a proxy as such, it’s a raw 4:4:4 file wrapped in a qt wrapper. As mentioned, it loads OK in Color and you have access to all the RED settings like ISO etc.
Thanks,
Tim

February 9, 2011 at 11:54 pmHello Tim,
Okay, I’m trying to work this out… What we are we both talking about? So talking out loud here.
If you do not have the R3D file that goes with the proxies (_F.mov, _H.mov, _M.mov, _P.mov) you’ll never be able to load that footage into anything.
Yes those files are wrappers, at set resolutions (_F.mov for full, _H.mov for half etc) and set debayer (see System Preferences REDcode for the os level debayer – how does windows do this?).
Now in colo(u)r 1.5.3 I can not load the mov proxy, only load the R3D file in the same folder… but…
So at a guess, could this be a FCP transcodes of the R3D’s? If the mov file opens without an R3D, then we know it is not a R3D (with or without an auto generated proxy). This does not mean its not using REDcode tho.
Now the final option I can see is that you (or someone) created FCP native RED QuickTime media (which is a 12-bit, 4:4:4 RGB 2K MOV REDcode thing??? I don’t know, never done it this way. Always conformed in or for Scratch, Lustre and now learning Resolve from standard ProRes offline). Reason why I think it is this native RED Mov is that Colo(u)r will still give you all the normal R3D ISO control etc – see link:
https://documentation.apple.com/en/color/usermanual/index.html#chapter=9%26section=11%26tasks=true
So the question I guess is… Does Resolve speak with native RED QuickTime media?
I’ll do a test… “Log and Transfer” Preferences choose Native, transcode… Resolve… No, does not see the media, sorry. Stay with Colo(u)r or render out a ProRes?
I hope this helps and in no way do I mean to say “sux eggs” because I equally could be wrong? It’s all about the learning.
Cheers,

Yes, the native file wrapped in qt.
Glad you could confirm that your Resolve also couldn’t see the file.
Cheers.
