red conforming
I’m using fcp to conform my avid offline edits of red rushes using an edl with clip names.
I import the edl, end up with a sequence and a bin with all the clips.
I select them all and choose reconnect media, search, it finds the file/s and bam the timeline reconnects. Works great….But.. i’m having to search and select EVERY clip in the “files to connect” window, fine for a scene but a whole edit, very tiresome.
Am I missing a trick here not being a regular fcp user.

Reconnecting media is sometimes problematic when you reconnect offline clips with new media. It really should not be an issue at all, but I think there are still some problems with reconnect that Apple needs to look at.

The fewer directories that FCP has to look through, the faster this goes. If possible, you’d want all of the media to be in one single folder, with no subfolders. With Red, the media is usually in folders organized by “reel”, but if all of these folders are in one single folder, it should go much more quickly.

I’m not sure I get what you mean…
If you mean, “are the red folders in the root of the drive”, then no.
Currently the red files are in sub folders…
e.g. SCSI ARRAY>PROJECT>RED RUSHES>DALLIES(DAY01-04)>ROLLS(01-54)>RED FOLDERS (A002_C001_1018NN.RDC etc)
Of course I select the top level folder (RED RUSHES) to search for the files in and it does find each one, but it’s a case of clicking search, select, search, select, search, select, etc for each clip….Surely if I’ve highlighted a bunch of clips to reconnect and select the top level folder that contains all the clips then it should just connect…
I think Kevin’s comment is probably closer to the mark, media management is not fcp’s strong point unfortunately.
I might try putting all the red files in a single folder or even the creating alias’s in a single folder trick, see if that works…
Just wondered if I was doing something dumb, which is quite possible 🙂

OK, what I’m suggesting is SCSI ARRAY/PROJECT/RED RUSHES/RED FOLDERS.
By breaking each day etc. into subfolders, you’re adding layers of complexity. It’s too much for FCP’s little media management brain to parse all at once. Simplify the directory structure and you’ll speed things up for yourself.
