  • recreating multi-layered sequence with new clips

Posted by Andy Hutchinson on June 29, 2005 at 7:42 pm

I have created a sequence with 15 layers of video clips. Each clip has unique attributes (filters and movement).

I want to recreate a new sequence with the same look but different clips.

If I replace the old clip with a new clip, the attributes disappear.

Is there a way to keep the attributes without deleting them?

I guess I could do this in After Effects but I would like to keep it all FCP if possible.

    Thanks

Paste Attributes>Content if you just want to replace the footage without changing filters, keyframes, etc.

    Technique: Using Paste Attributes

Going the other way copying the filters and keyframes in 4.5 had issues according to this post phorum – The Bug Report – Paste Attributes: No Mo’ Keyframes

I would notice that when I did a Paste Attributes>Content the keyframes would slide around. I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to track down the issue. It probably has to do with the fact that the new content wasn’t the identical length as the raw clips durations in the bins even though in the sequence their durations was identical.

    Someone will enlighten us…

According to these the song–bug–remains the same.

PS If this fifteen layer composition will always have content replaced in it maybe it would be more efficient to go FCP–>Motion–>FCP–but that assumes that there are filters and behaviors to match your FCP’s. Well, no, it would be a combination of FCP filters (as long as there are no keyframes in your FCP filters) and Motion behaviors and effects.

    Andy,

i suppose you could do this with nested sequences, ie build up your edit with 15 layers of (nested) sequences ?
nest each clip (layer) and then recreate the motion and filter settings of the contained clip onto the parent sequence (nest) … painstaking if the paste attributes doesn’t work, but at least you only have to do it once.
then in future you could just drop new footage into each nested sequence, and the motion and filter settings of it parent would apply.

you might want to test this on a simpler project first, rendering edits with nested sequences always seems to be a performance dog, but in theory i think it should work (although if it won’t I’m hopeful it’ll be pointed out by some of the boards more experienced editors before you spend too much time trying it!!)

    cheers
