  • Recovering/Saving project when your system hangs…

    Hey gang,

I did a few searches to see if anyone else has posted this solution, but one thing I’ve discovered is if my Mac hangs with a bunch of apps open (including FCP), I can consistently get control back and save/exit my FCP project (and other apps), if I just hold the power button down for a couple seconds (Not too long or it will shut down).

What happens is if you press the power button for 1-2 seconds and wait for maybe 30 seconds, is your Mac will go into sleep mode. Both monitors should go into power saving mode. You should be patient after pressing the power button, and just wait until the system is ready and it will typically go into standby or sleep mode.

Then, when you press the spacebar (or another key), your monitors should then wake back up, and you have more control of your system — usually enough so that you can command tab to apps that are hung, and start closing and saving your files. Sometimes I’ll just ensure my FCP project is saved and exit out of FCP, then choose restart from the Apple menu.

While I used to have to just hold the power down and recover my project files, I really can use this technique with about 95% success.

Try it out and let me know if it helps you in any way!
