Recovering Muffled Voice?

I suggest that you talk to the people who did the noise reduction, and request that they do a less drastic pass on the noise removal. It sounds as if in effectively reducing the noise, they stepped on a chunk of the voice, most likely the mid to high end.

You could try reducing a bit of the bass and the lower mids, but you really can’t get back what’s been removed, and it sounds as if it’s a good piece of the high end. Better to have a little background noise, and still get the full spectrum of the voice.

In my experience, I’ve found better results with:

1. Grabbing a noise profile
2. Applying a well tuned noise gate
3. Applying noise reduction to the remaining audio

Noise reduction in this instance is usually much less severe, reserving those frequencies above 4kHz that can really add “breath” to the human voice.

I’ve also had luck with BBE’s Harmonic Maximizer plugin (the blue one), applying one tuned near 2-3k and another applied tuned to 5k.
