Recovering AEP files from a drive
Hello all,
So here’s an interesting problem I’ve been struggling with: I recently had a hard drive of mine crash. The drive had a few of my After Effects projects on it, as well as the related media. Using recovery software, I was able to extract all the raw data from the drive, and I can now find all of my files — all except the *.aep files themselves.
Is it possible that the *.aep files were given a different file extension upon recovery? If so, is there a way to tell which one? Has anyone ever heard of something like this happening before? It seems odd that all my data would be intact save for the *.aep files.
Anyway, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try making a new AEP and saving it. Then you should be able to find out what type it is. In OSX, you can search, and it will show the file type. In Windows, I’m not sure … maybe right-click, and properties? Maybe there’s another way, if in fact Windows names it as a different type.
