I have cut a 30 second commercial on my Macbook Pro with FCP 5.1.2. I need to convert the file to Beta SP for broadcast but the duplicating house has told me the 5.1.2 is too advanced and they cannot open the file. They suggested recording to mini DV and they would pull a dub from that. I have all my media on an external hard drive and only one firewire port on the MacBook. Has this ever happened to anyone and can I resolve this short of installing a second firewire port on the Macbook Pro?

Breathe…. Just export a self contained quicktime to your internal laptop hard drive. Plug the deck into the firewire port. Play back the quicktime off the lap top drive. It will work just fine.

Does your hard drive not have a firewire pass through port on it? It should. If it does, skip the above and plug in a deck/camera to record to miniDV.

Or burn a CD with the quicktime on it and give it to the dub house. They apparently have FCP, so they’ll be able to open a quicktime and output out of their fcp.

Since you’re only dealing with 30 seconds the options are limitless. You ftp them a file. At 5 minutes per gig DV goes a long way.

If you want to contact me off list then I can pull the output of that project for you. I have a beta SP deck and an up to date verison of FCP.

You can get my e-mail address from my profile.

    I am in West Toronto.

Was the original project native to dv? Looking past your initial inquiry I would be more concerned with your promo being dropped on a dv tape then bumped up to beta. I would suggest as others have exporting a qt in whatever format/codec the project started as and have the post house lay that to tape. just my 2 sense.
