Is there any way for us to get the sequence time code to be the time code on tape when recording out? We’re using Media Composer 3.1.1 and our deck is a Sony DV DSR-25 connected via Firewire through Mojo. We’ve tried switching to DV in TV to external on the deck menu but just get a stationary 0:00:00:00 as the TC. Can this be accomplished?

Can you do a digital cut using Mojo and firewire?.
I have DX and Adrenaline here so I’m not sure.
If so it is pretty straight forward.
This is accomplished by laying down 30 seconds of time code on your tape that begins 15 to 20 seconds before your sequence time code start and then doing an assemble edit in digital cut.
You will need to enable digital cut in you deck settings in Media composer.

I can and do use Digital Cut but I can’t get that to work with the sequence TC. In Digital Cut, Deck Control is normally set to Record Deck Time which works and makes sense. There is an option to set Deck Control to Sequence Time but then it goes and searches for an inpoint on the tape that doesn’t even exist (hours off from the TC layed down). Is the only way to make this work to manually set the TC Preset to just before the sequence TC, then lay down the TC on the tape, then try the Digital Cut with Sequence Time as the Deck Control setting? If that would work, THAT’S the easiest way to get sequence TC on tape?

Yes, but you need to be in Assemble Edit mode and make sure that the time code you lay on the tape extends 3 seconds farther than the start point on you sequence.

    Yes.

Assemble edit won’t work via Firewire – at least not in my experience. You need to have RS422 control get that.

I just use a DSR11 (there’s no preset TC setting) and don’t have any requirements what program start time is, for what I do… I just have my sequence start with black at 00;00;00;00 and actual program start at 30 secs. Record 30 secs of black on the DSR11, then using digital cut (record deck time) have the in point set to 20 secs and have the in point of my sequence start at 20 secs. It’s frame accurate enough for my purposes and many times it’s dead on but never more than a frame or two off. For client review, no one is going to ask “Can you shave a frame or two off this shot @ so&so timecode”? 😀 It’s either delete a scene or rearrange something, and this way works well for me.
