DOn’t use the onboard mic. See if you can tap into the mixer feed if you can…they can send you a proper signal. Putting headphones on and dialing the levels down until it sounds decent would be good.

Really, you should get a proper mic setup and then 2-4 input mixer with VU meter so you can monitor audio, then send it to the camera. A camera alone and using the onboard mic is about the worse thing you can do.

It’s very important to understand how the audio flows through your camera. There is an audio amplifier that comes BEFORE the volume control. If you feed very loud audio into your camera (either from the internal mic or an external mixer) and adjust the meters so they’re not in the red, you can still have distorted sound because the dials are not affecting that first amplifier.

This is why the best way to check your sound quality is to record some audio during a rehearsal or sound check and then play it back. If it’s clean, you’re good to go. If not, with an internal mic you’re out of luck, but with a mixer you can turn down the output of your mixer and turn up your dials on the camera. A good rule of thumb is if you have the volume controls turned down low (under 1/2 way) you’re probably in trouble.

Where are you setting you levels?

There is the “safe region” and any signal that goes outside of that region
could possible cause clipping.

Maybe you know what microphone to use to capture live audio (rock concert)
with my Panasonic AG-HPX 171 DVCPro HD P2 Cam?
Is the Sennheizer Wireless SKM 100-865 G3D a good choice
I really want to look for a quality stereo mic for this camera
Anyone got experience or ideas?

That microphone looks like a good instrument or vocal mic.
And it may be good for a whole band, but I would have to
try it out first. Also, this is only one channel.

There are some very good stereo microphones out there,
and it’s all dependent on your budget.

The Rode Stereo Video mic has some good reviews, but dont
mount it on your camera, and be careful to oreder the correct
adaptors from the stereo 1/8 inch TRS to XLR x 2.

And that would be the cheapest way to go.
