  • Reconnecting Media Bug??

    Posted by Todd Sandler on June 10, 2009 at 7:09 pm

    Hi Everyone:

    After importing an XML file into FCP, everything media file to be reconnected. That is fine. However, all the clips need to be reconnected individually because when the reconnect media button is hit, it searches and finds “an unspecified path.”

    All the media is on the drive and named correctly, however FCP will only search individually. Not so bad if you only have a handful of clips. I, however, have hours of footage and am spending an exorbitant amount of time re-linking each clip. I called Apple and they said it is not a bug since it doesnt happen for everyone. I trashed prefs, that didn’t do it. I tried a second CPU with the same XML’s and that didn’t do it. I have never experienced this issu before until now. Could it be the XML?? Is there a fix/workaround??

    any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

    WHy do you need to reconnect? Did you change the media path? Put the footage on a different hard drive?

    The footage arrived on a “mobile” HD to be transferred onto a “stationary” hard drive then sent back to production. So yes, the path had to change. However, even when opening the XML on the mobile drive, the issue of “unspecified path” was still there. I spoke to the Post House and they suggested I remove the .mov extension using a renamer program. Fortunately, that seemed to work, but not sure why I would have to go through the trouble of doing that.

    XMLs or Media Manages with entire clips – either way, this problem is new and they broke something. it’s in FCPs 6.0.5 and 6.0.6 that I’ve noticed so far. I don’t think it’s related to QT version.

    Everyone should pitch in and report this bug as this is a huge issue with media management.

    Hi
    Just wanted to offer that I’ve just solved this mystery for myself.
    Not sure how to explain other then tell you my story;

    Working on a large show across multiple edit systems. I had duplicated the project file and handed it to another editor with a copy of all the media to organize. Then I brought the newly organized project back on to my system, copied the organized bins into my project and attempted to re-link them… only to have the “” is missing and unspecified path problem.

    Then, I decided to try re-linking the media within the project file I’d been given… no problem. Only after I did this was I able to properly copy the organized clips into my project.

    So, in summary- It looks like the path information may not carry across projects well when the media is offline. Make sure the media is connected before you move your clips from project to project.

    Hope that helps!
