So, I think I know the answer to this already, but thought I would check with others before resigning myself to a dejected sigh. Basically, I have received some 500 clips that have all been placed in separate folders for organization (from a RED One shoot where the DIT rendered out a quarter sized ProRes clip in each of the Red One’s naively created folders for each of the takes).

For the project, I’m going to be working on it simultaneously with another editor, but we’re not going to have synched drives. By this, I mean that he will be forced to have his ProRes files spread across three external drives, and mine will be across only one. In both cases, each clip will be in it’s own folder.

Obviously, the problem arises when I make changes remotely, and then he gets the project file and has to relink the clips so that they match his drive, and vice versa. Again, I’m pretty sure we’re going to have to either do this clip by clip, or by moving all of our appropriate ProRes files into a single Finder folder, but….

Is there a way to a batch reconnect for a bin, where each of the clips on the harddrive are in their own folder?

I’ve done all sorts of tests with the Media Mangler (which, unless I’m forced to, I stay away from.) and I can’t seem to get it to do more than one clip at a time. Now, I know the obvious answer to this problem, which I stated before, is to move all of the clips into a single Finder folder, but I want other people’s ideas before I move to that method, as I want to keep the primary and backup drive structures the same.

    Many thanks in advance.

Oh, and we’re running FCP 6.0.4 on both systems.

    Tough situation to be in.

If I were you I would try and make it so that your systems and media directory structures are set up as close to each others as possible.

If it was me and one machine has to have it spread across 3 drives then on the second I would spread the file/folders the same way in 3 directory’s on your one drive.

    for example:
3 drives machine has disks called: media drive A, media drive B and media drive C.
1 Drive machine has a disk called: large media drive

On media Drive A, B and C have folders called Project_Name_Media_A, Project_Media_Name_B, Project_Media_Name_C respectively which contain all the media with.

On large media drive have 1 folder called All_Project_Name_Media and withing that folder have 3 subfolders Project_Name_Media_A, Project_Name_Media_B, Project_Name_Media_C, which contain the same media structure as the media Drive A, B and C folders.

Also in FCP put the clips in 3 bins so that when reconnecting you use locate and reconnect from relative path from the appropriate Project_Name_Media_X folder.

Not perfect, but a few test runs and working out a strict strategy at the start will save hair follicles later 🙂

    Good luck!

Reconnecting will NOT cross over a “folder” line.

Regardless what scheme you come up with, if you have folders within folders, reconnect will NOT find the clip. You will have to manually open up the folder and “guide” it to the correct clip.

This is why we prefer to have a folder structure that has a minimum of “sub folders”. I try to keep it “3 clicks from the root”. That’s not always possible, but it is optimal.

I really don’t understand the point of have a single clip in a folder. We throw all of our media into very large folders. This makes it much easier to scan and find shots using “Coverflow”. And, as you’ve just discovered, it’s much easier to to work with the reconnect process.

this is what i figured. i’m sure it’s setup like this, as to avoid grabbing the clip “101_A_02” from one of four other projects I have going. I just wish there were a way to have it jump folders though. i’ve already ended up moving them to solve the problem, but thanks for the input!
    cheers,
