Unfortunately FCP doesn’t do this. It reconnects based off file name and it derives the IN point from the start of file.

You’ll need to bring all the clips in, and hand cut them over the EDL.

I can not tell you how disappointed I am!

I work with offline material done in 29.97. I have to online that material and make it 23.97 for visual effects work, graphics, and film output? There’s got to be a better way…. does there?

I feel your pain. I’m in the same boat as I use FCP as my backbone for finishing. I’ve just gotten used to hand reconnecting… or when the offline editor updates the cut in the middle of finishing, I have him bring all his changes to the top video layer so I can ID them and batch digitize clean media.

It’s one of the great features of our Flame – EDL’s connect based off reel and TC. But that’s also a $60k piece of software.

Bleh, Flame… Shlame. Actually I am a Flame Artist trying to make it a go on the cheaper / more flexible systems.

    Have you tried…

    1. Import 29.97 Edl.
    2. Capture 29.97 Footage.
    3. Reverse Telecine.
    4. Convert 29.97 Edl to 23.976.
    5. Import 23.976 Edl.
    6. Reconnect 23.976 clips to Reverse Telecined clips…. if it’s based on first frame… shouldn’t that first frame line up?

Well…. In the worst case scenario this won’t be as big of an issue once HD is the norm. 🙂

[Dominik Bochenski] “I can not tell you how disappointed I am!”

If you knew anything about Media Manager and Final Cut Pro, then you would know how disappointed just about ALL of us are with Media Manager.

This very issue is something that Apple just doesn’t seem to see as important. According to Apple, all is well with Media Manager, but you can’t perform this simple task that a truly professional application should be able to perform.

Media Management is the single biggest failing in Final Cut Pro. All we can hope for is that Apple completely re-writes the app at some point. Not really expecting that, but stranger things have happened.

Well, thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I’ll find some workaround for now.

I had hoped Final Cut Pro Server would track media via reel name and timecode but it’s all file name based. Look at CatDV… they get it… it tracks media by metadata not filename.

We use a custom linking system to link Avid OMF media to Quicktime media based on reel and timecode. I use CatDV to generate a database of all the Quicktime media One of our IT guys wrote an app that simply replaces filenames in an exported FCP xml. I’ve coined it “instassemble” as opposed to auto assemble or conform. Looks like we’ll need to use the same thing with FCP unless CatDV will do it someday.

Hi there, i’ve to digitise more than a 100 tapes to 10 bit uncompressed QT using FCP 6.0.4 (for archiving purposes) but at the same time i have to make QT DV PAL of the same footage for an offline (using avid xpress) I have done a test an is working OK up yo this point. Now the offline people gave me an EDL of the edit (as a test) for online in FCP. So I imported the EDL to FCP and is fine, but when I reconnect the media, (EDL from Avid to QT 10 uncompressed) everything is off ( QT star now from 00:00:00:00, lose original TC) is any way to reconnect media without losing TC. is any other way to do it rather than manually changing the time for each shot? or I have to redigitised the footage again using the EDL?
can any one help me with this thanks.
    Eduardo

So all your PAL offine media starts at 00:00:00:00 or when you reconnect it comes in at 00:… ? If the latter is true sound like your QT media all starts at 00…

the media start all at 00:00:00:00 but when I reconnect it doesn’t recognize TC if one cut start at 1 min. the shot will start at the begining of that tape, that’s mean all material when I try to reconnect to the EDL start from the start doesn’t take in count TC at all, always reel name.
