Reconform Nightmare
A client delivered me a 100 minute documentary project that is 90% dv footage (50% of which was captured at 23.98 DV Anamorphic and 50% 29.97 4×3 DV). The other 10% is various 23.97 HD footage (XDCAM, ProRes, HDV). I do not have access to master tapes and even if I did, nothing was logged and each tape’s reel is named either “NONAME” or “001”.
Now HBO has decided that for delivery, they want everything to be made HD.
We have decided that the best way to do this is to upconvert all the DV material through a terranex. We will create 3 different sequences. 1) DV 23.98 Anamorphic 2) DV 29.97 4×3 and 3) 23.98 HD Material. The DV will be sent through a terranex and brought back in and the HD material will be output to HDCAM and recaptured at 59.94.Ultimately everything will end up in a 59.94 HD sequence.
As you can see this project has turned from a headache to a nightmare. I will eventually be capturing 3 different tapes and having to edit everything back together.
I realize that after capture I will have 3 100 minute prores files that will each have various sections of black where the footage from the other capture files will be filling the holes. My question (I think I already know the answer but am hoping I’m wrong) is, can FCP bring in an EDL and add cut points like color can? This way I can have each of the captured files cut up and will just remove the black and move things back to a single video layer.
I’m kind of grasping here, hoping my workflow can somehow be improved and I won’t have to go shot by shot and reedit this project. Any help is appreciated.
Also, does a Terranex do a better job of upconversion then my Kona 3? I’ve never done any real tests, but would think the Kona’s upconversion is broadcast acceptable.
