Recommended hard drive for DCP?
Posted by Gustavo Bermudas on August 24, 2011 at 7:01 pmCan anybody recommend what’s the standard hard drive used for DCP?
I know it has to be Linux formatted, 500GB, but my confusion is when it comes to connect the drive to the DCP server. I’ve heard that in many cases many theaters couldn’t get the hard drives to mount, due to a power issue, if they’re self powered they only require the big USB connector in the back instead of the mini USB? Which are kind of hard to find latelyAaron Owen replied 8 years, 9 months ago 7 Members · 7 Replies -

August 24, 2011 at 7:26 pmI like the WD3200AAKS personally, 320GB but should fit all feature length DCPs. It’s a server-class/AV HDD so it’s used to constant access and constant read operations (no overheating issues etc, better reliability compare to normal consumer drives). I’m sure there are 500/640GB versions or even newer generations you can use.
Use a CRU-DataPort StorCase DataExpress DX115 DC 6600-7100-0500 / 6606-5000-0500 Carrier+Frame for the enclosure. All cinema accept that.
Good luck.

That’s the DCI format, true, but I have had some testing success with NTFS-formatted drives, as well.

September 13, 2011 at 12:24 pmA friend of mine uses SATA drives. That’s on a Doremi server. Guess it depends on what server you’re feeding.

July 28, 2012 at 12:14 pmNTFS works on DOREMI and some other servers (with the latest firmware).
the easiest way to deliver an EXT2 formatted harddisk (without using any linux) is the following though:
make your DCP with openDCP, then install Acronis Disk Director (the trial version will do, you can also burn a boot CD for any type of operating system) and follow these steps:
connect external harddrive, format it with Disk Director to EXT2 (cluster size 4KB) and after that change the i-node size to 128KB (right click on the harddisk -> change i-node size). do not forget to click on “commit changes” after each step.
the hard disk does not need to be set to “primary” or “active” in case you wonder. the 2 steps above are enough. windows: the Acronis Disk Director comes with all the drivers you need, so you can copy your DCP content (root folder) on it. mac: you need a 3rd-party driver to read/write ext2/3 file systems. you can either use the freeware Fuse with the Ext2/3 extension or Paragon EXTFS (also available as a trial).
