Someone recently recommended the Seagate Barracuda to me as a good hard drive to edit with. I need an external drive however for mobility, and wondered if anyone can recommend something equivalent to the Barracuda, or other preferred drives that can handle video material well.

    Thanks for the help!

All of the SATA drives from the majors are good. Seagate, Hitachi, WD, and even Samsung are just fine. I recommned that you get yourself one or more enclosures that will allow you to swap out bare drives yourself. Bare drives are really cheap now, and that way you can get a lot more for your money.

Just rememeber, no matter what you buy, format all media drives with the Apple Disk Utility as Mac extended – no journaling before capturing video to them.

(David – could you please clarify the difference between journaling and not journaling?
    Thanks.)

    Hi David,

I didn’t see your response before reposting today by mistake. Hopefully it doesn’t show again. To follow up on your comment I’m currently working on a G4 with maxed RAM, a 1.42 processor, upgraded graphics card, and FCS 1. I don’t have SATA on my computer, but I think most come with firewire options as well. If I understand your comment on bare drives I’d prefer to by with the enclosure included, since the drive is for someone I’m working with that will walk with the project once completed. Hope that makes sense.

Are there specific models you like working with in any of the brands you’ve suggested? I use a Seagate Freeagent, but have been told it’s not exactly built for video editing. I’ve also worked with WD and have found the one I used to be pretty noisy.

    Thanks
