  • Recommendations? FCExpress or FCStudio for second workstation?

I already have Final Cut Studio running on a dual G5. Now that the new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duos are out (this morning!), I want a laptop that I can take on the road with me. As I understand it, I HAVE to purchase another copy of Final Cut and CANNOT install my current software on the laptop (unless I un-install it from the G5 first) -right? …even though I will be the only user of both systems.

If so, how well does FCE work with FCS? My intention would be to do capture and initial editing with the laptop, then finish the program on the G5. Will FCP open an Express project? If yes, then can I simply plug my Firewire HD into the G5 and it will reconnect the media?

Vice versa, can FCE open a FCS project?

    Is timecode supported in FCE?

    Thanks!

    Bob,
You will absolutely want to have FCS across all of your systems. The savings of FCE over FCS will be lost almost immediately dealing with the missing features and 1-way project sharing sharing between the two programs. Also, depending on your exact system specs, FCS will perform BETTER on a MBP than on your G5. Why waste all of that extra horsepower on software Apple offers to pre-install option of on the mini.
I’ve been told in the past that the FCS studio license allows for installation on both a desktop and a notebook with the assumption that both won’t be used at the same time. Can anyone check me on that one? I know that’s what I had going until about a week ago when I formatted my G5 to sell ‘er off.
I think you’re good to install your current copy… assuming you already have the universal install discs.

    Thanks for the reply Zak.

I hope you’re right. It seems kind of silly to me that an indivudual could not install the software on both systems… as long as only one is used at a time. I can see the potential for cheating on this, but still, why punish your customers?

I went ahead and placed my order for the laptop… without the FCE installed option.

    THanks.

    Bob
